CM gives ‘English’ tip to bureaucrats

West Bengal Civil Service officers have been advised to improve their spoken English skill. The advice came from none other than Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who observed that many civil service officers lack the ability to speak English fluently because the subject was withdrawn from primary level education during the Left regime.

Mamata further said: “I was too weak in English when I became MP for the first time. There was a feeling of inferiority in my mind as I was not fluent in the language.”

Addressing West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) Officers Association at Town Hall on Saturday, the chief minister said: “You (Civil servants) have good command over English grammar and you can write notes in English very good. But many of you do not speak English fluently. We are contemplating arranging a bridge course for improving your spoken English skills in collaboration with British Council. The seven-day course will help you improve your spoken English skill.”

The chief minister also taught the civil servants the lesson of getting relief from stress and tension. “Play games, listen to music and be relaxed. Even I used to play dangoli (a popular game that children play in villages). This is essential,” she advised the bureaucrats.

She instructed her secretary, Gautam Sanyal, to give all the Block Development Officers (BDO) her telephone number and e-mail address so that they can contact her when required. “Contact me and let me know what you want to convey,” she said.

A section of civil servant officers said the chief minister wants to open a direct communication channel with BDOs to keep pressure on district magistrates (DMs).

Brushing aside CPM’s allegation that the Trinamool government is politically vindictive, Mamata said she would have sent many opposition leaders to jail on charges of corruption had she been “really vindictive”.

“Some say that I am vindictive. I would have sent many (CPM leaders) to jail had I been really vindictive,” she reportedly said at the annual general meeting of the West Bengal Civil Service (Executive) officers’ association at Town Hall. “During the last 34 years, many corruptions took place but I did not open the files,” a WBCS officer said quoting the chief minister.

Her comment comes a day after it came to light that the state government has written to the Centre asking it why should Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee not be interrogated in connection with the Nandigram police firing that claimed 14 lives on 14 March, 2007.

Mamata promises trauma centre to Singur farmers

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday promised to set up a “trauma centre at Singur” where a number of farmers have committed suicide after they failed to get back their land which was taken away for Tata Motor’s small car project during the Left regime.

“Our government will set up a trauma centre at Singur and I have asked Becharam Manna (Minister of State for Agriculture) to arrange four acres of land for the trauma centre,” Mamata announced at a government programme at Polba – 20 kilometres from Singur- on Saturday.

Mahadeb Das, a senior Singur Krishi Jomi Raksha committee leader said five farmers whose farmland were taken away forcefully by the Left Front in 2006 have committed suicide as they could not get their land back.

“The land dispute is now pending in the court. We are waiting for the verdict. I believe that the people of Singur will win. But we have to keep patience,” Mamata said.

After coming to power, Mamata Banerjee government’s first Cabinet decision was to return land to unwilling farmers of Singur. After that her government has received severe setback from the Kolkata High Court, which declared the state government’s Singur land reclamation law unconstitutional. Later, the state government moved the Supreme Court. The unwilling farmers of Singur have already started getting vocal against the Mamata Banerjee’s party and for delay in returning land to them. Now they are raising voice in favour of an out-of-court settlement with the Tatas.

Realising that the party is fast losing popularity in Singur for failing to deliver on her promise, Mamata on Thursday urged the unwilling farmers not to lose patience. She also sent out a message to the farmers that she has not forgotten the promise she made to them.
